H.S. Parent Night Success

THANK YOU to everyone who attended and helped

plan/carry-out our high school Parent Night last night!

It was a great opportunity for high school students and their parents to learn what OWATC has to offer. Students and parents attended an orientation session and met with instructors, counselors and administration to take tours of specific program areas and have their questions answered. Some lucky attendees had the chance to step into a money machine to grab even more free money; after all, HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ATTEND OWATC TUITION FREE!!!

SkillsUSA National Winners

It happens every June! Thousands flock to Kansas City to take part in the Skills USA National Competition. Skills USA is a competition that demonstrates the skills and abilities of America’s finest students. Students compete in 91 hands-on skill and leadership contests representing 130 different occupational areas. Skills USA takes place at a Regional and State level before winners at both of those go on to compete at Nationals. Every year outstanding students from the Ogden-Weber Tech College are among the thousands finding their way to Kansas City, and every year our students perform exceptionally!! This year was no different. The Ogden-Weber Tech College sent seven students representing our Sheet Metal, Machining, Masonry, Medical Assisting, and Cosmetology programs. Our students competed against other students in their chosen fields from across the country. It was literally the best of the best all gathered in the same city, all determined to bring home the winners medals to each of their respective schools. Each of our students performed wonderfully and represented the college in a fantastic way!

The Ogden-Weber TECH College had 3 students receive medals in this year’s competition:

Laina Call – Gold Medal in Cosmetology – High School

Justin McCorkle – Gold in Sheet Metal

Chantel Krueger – Weigmann – Bronze in Medical Assisting

Justin McCorkle was determined to continue our Sheet Metal programs sheer domination of Skills USA by bringing home that programs 14^th straight gold medal. Justin was successful in his quest for gold and has added his chapter to our Sheet Metal programs legacy at Skills USA.

Laina Call, a high school student from Bonneville High School was also successful in her quest for gold. Laina competed against 35 other high school students from across the country. With that many competitors Laina said that going into the competition she was hoping for a top 6 placing at best, “ sitting there on Friday night waiting for the winners to be announced, I couldn’t even look up as they started. I had my face in my hands and when they read the third place finisher, and then the second, I didn’t even hear them say my name as the first place winner! Amber Fuchs was sitting by me and all of a sudden she is shaking me and people are freaking out.”

As the National Champion at Skills USA in Cosmetology, Laina will have the wonderful opportunity of going to Paris, France in November 2010 to be a part of the OMC Hairworld Training. She will be taught by the renowned Salvatore Fodero as a part of this once in a lifetime opportunity!!

Congratulations to all of our students that competed in Skills USA at all levels! You have represented yourselves and the college with professionalism and determination. Congratulations to our wonderful instructors who spend countless hours helping their students perfect their skills! We look forward to next year’s competition, and who knows, maybe you will be there making history as you compete at the Skills USA National Competition…

Merit Badge College

Last Saturday, the college hosted a Merit Badge College event. More than 130 Boy Scouts and 40+ parents and leaders came to the OWATC to earn merit badges. College personnel taught the merit badge classes resulting in the scouts earning/working on a total of 460 merit badges. The merit badge counselors worked hard to put together top notch curriculum for the boys and many parents/leaders expressed their appreciation for a worthwhile event.
